Sackville Community Band Rebecca Cohn Performance

On February 11th, the Sackville Community Band accompanied the Dalhousie Symphonic Wind Ensemble in a performance at the Sir James Dunn Theatre. The concert was a great success for both bands and was an excellent presentation of the talent Sackville provides to the public.

The concert opened with the Dalhousie Symphonic Wind Ensemble, which was conducted by Gary Adams. The ensemble played various pieces and suites, including “Poet and Peasant Overture,” composed by Franz Von Suppe, and “Symphonic Suite from Robin Hood,” from the composed by Michael Karmen.

After a brief intermission, the Sackville Community Band was on stage and introduced by it’s present conductor, Jim Forde, a supporter of the community of Sackville and the Manager of the National Youth Band of Canada.  The band, made up of 46 members, played brilliantly and displayed characteristics of poise and grace that were a tribute to their community.  The pieces played by the Sackville Community Band included “Dolphin in the Sky, “ a march by the Japanese composer Masao Yabe Sackville Community Band and “Through the Eyes of Love,” from the motion picture, “Icecastles.” This piece was accompanied by the professional musician, Frank Ridgeway, who played a wonderful trumpet solo. The band then continued on to play two more pieces before both bands combined to do the grand finale of “On the Mall,” composed by Edwin Franko Goldman. The final piece was conducted masterfully by Maggie Helms.

The concert was a great success and one of the many productions that the Sackville Community Band partake in. The band performs roughly 8 concerts a year, but have been present and playing in many community events set up by the SCDA. The band practices on a weekly basis for these performances, and the rewards of their labour is definitely well worth the effort. For further performance, the calendar located on the Sackville website will have the dates , locations and times posted. For an enjoyable evening of great music and beautiful presentation, the Sackville Community Band is highly recommended!
